A trip planner for people who travel Japan in their own car or on their own bike, not by plane or bullet train. Choose your vehicle, start and destination to get a route, fuel cost (plus ferry fares and estimated expressway tolls), and the hot springs and saunas closest to where you are going.

Contains ads (PR). Beta version covering all of Japan. Routes to Hokkaido and Okinawa use the main ferry lines (with fares). We only list hot springs and saunas whose opening status and location we have checked (as of October 2026).

How it works, operator & disclaimer

How it works

Routes: we pick the route through a network of about 250 key places across Japan connected by national and prefectural roads (Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu are linked by bridges and tunnels), preferring the bigger roads that suit touring. Mountain roads count as 1.2× their length and national roads with narrow sections (Nukumi Pass, Mt. Koya, Totsukawa, etc.) as 2.2×, so they are only used when there is no other way. Each leg's distance is the straight-line distance multiplied by a curve factor. Scenic-road marks are the author's own picks.
Schedule: for overnight trips the route is split into days of roughly equal driving time, stopping preferably at onsen towns.
Driving time: local roads average 28 km/h in towns, 40 km/h in the countryside and 32 km/h in the mountains; expressways 87 km/h for all vehicles. Breaks are not included.
Fuel cost: distance ÷ fuel economy × price per liter. Defaults: regular ¥172, premium ¥183 (September 2026 estimates based on the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy survey and others), diesel ¥160 (September 2026 national average). Fuel economy is assumed to be the same on expressways.
Refueling: one full tank is assumed to cover 80% of the typical tank capacity × fuel economy. Gas stations are scarce in the mountains and many close at night, so fill up early.
Expressway tolls: an ETC estimate using the NEXCO formula (¥24.6 per km × vehicle factor [kei & motorcycles 126 cc+ 0.8, standard car 1.0, mid-size 1.2, large 1.65, extra-large 2.75] + ¥150 terminal charge, 25% off beyond 100 km and 30% off beyond 200 km, 10% consumption tax, rounded to ¥10). Holiday and late-night discounts are not included.
Expressway routes: we do not have expressway or interchange data, so expressway distance is estimated from the local-road distance (≈ local distance × 0.9, plus about 10 km of ordinary road at each end). Actual interchanges, distances and tolls will differ. Urban expressways (Shuto, Hanshin, etc.) are not included. No expressway estimate under 40 km.
Bridges, tunnels and ferries: the Seto-Ohashi Bridge, Shimanami Kaido, Akashi-Kaikyo & Onaruto bridges (via Awaji Island) and the Kanmon Tunnel charge tolls (not included). On these routes Google Maps opens without "avoid tolls". For Hokkaido and Okinawa we choose among the main ferry lines (Aomori, Oma, Muroran, Hachinohe, Oarai, Sendai, Nagoya, Niigata, Tsuruga, Maizuru, Otaru, Tomakomai, Kagoshima, Naha), treating time on board as distance at 40 km/h. Fares are the cheapest-season one-way fares checked on each operator's official fare table on October 2, 2026 (Taiheiyo Ferry: published by the Japan Long Course Ferry Service Association and others). One driver is assumed; peak surcharges, discounts and fuel-surcharge changes are not included. One hour is added per boarding.
Open in Google Maps: local-road routes open with "avoid highways and tolls". The Google Maps app accepts only three waypoints, so long routes may differ slightly (opening each day separately is closer).
Onsen and sauna information is as of writing. Check opening days, prices and whether motorcycles can park on the official sites. Road closures and winter ice are not reflected.

Settings such as fuel prices and route type are saved only in your browser (localStorage) and are never sent to our servers. Start and destination are not saved. Clearing your browser data removes them.
"Ad (PR)" links take you to affiliate networks (ASPs) or advertisers, which use cookies and similar tools to record bookings as the operator's referrals. Their privacy policies apply.
To display fonts (Google Fonts), your device's IP address and similar data are sent to Google. "Open in Google Maps" takes you to Google's site.
Words you type as start or destination are sent to OpenStreetMap (Nominatim) and the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan only when the place is not in our list. Search results © OpenStreetMap contributors and others.
When Google route distances are enabled, the coordinates of your start and destination are sent to Google.
We do not use analytics at present. If we add them, we will update this section.
Anything you send through the contact form (Google Forms) is used only to reply and improve the site, and is not shared with third parties except as required by law.
External transmission (Japan's Telecommunications Business Act): this site sends information from your device (IP address, page viewed, browser type, etc.) to: ① Google LLC (Google Fonts) to display text; ② the OpenStreetMap Foundation (Nominatim) and the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan when searching place names; ③ Google LLC when you use "Open in Google Maps" or the contact form; ④ affiliate networks (ASPs) and advertisers when you click an "Ad (PR)" link. Their privacy policies apply.

Opening days, prices and facility information are as of writing. The map drawing and road distances are approximate data prepared by hand and may contain errors. Onsen and sauna opening status can change.

Data sources

Opening status, locations and bathing hours of onsen and saunas were checked against each facility's official site, Super Sento Zenkoku Kensaku, Wikipedia (via Weblio), Mapion and Sauna Ikitai (October 2026). Facility descriptions are written by the operator.
Ferry fares are from each operator's official fare table (Taiheiyo Ferry: Japan Long Course Ferry Service Association and others); fuel prices are estimates based on the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy survey and others.
